Os Instrumentos!

Atabaque, Agogo, Berimbau, Pandeiro, and Reco-reco!!

Oba! Yippee! Sugoi! The instruments finally arrived! :D

The instruments arrived on Friday night!

When I got home from work I noticed a letter from the Japan Post, telling us they had been at 3pm but nobody was home. I was so excited! Later I rode to the Central Post Office, but they told me the instruments were still in the truck, and they would go back to our apartment later that night.

So I rode back home as fast as I could, and I waited.

The delivery truck finally arrived at 7.20pm, and I signed for the package. I gently placed it on our bedroom floor, took a photo with my mobile phone, and emailed it to Cafune!

The instruments arrived wrapped in tape and cardboard!

After that I picked her up from the train station. :)

We rushed back home to open the package. We slowly cut the tape and cardboard packaging. The first thing to pop out was the first pandeiro inside the pandeiro bag. I opened it up, and had a look. “Wow, really nice”. Next we cut through some more cardboard and revealed the atabaque inside an awesome atabaque backpack. We unzipped the backpack and inside were the atabaque, and another pandeiro. I opened the second pandeiro bag, but was shocked to see a great big split in the skin. “Oh no, it’s broken”. Well, it’s fixable, or replaceable, so not to worry too much. Inside the atabaque was the reco-reco made of bamboo, and the agogo made of coconut shells (castanha). 4/5 aint bad, after all, it came all the way from Brazil in very little protective packaging, no bubble wrap in Sao Paulo I guess.

This convinces me our guardian angel has been looking out for us ever since our original money for the instruments was lost in Brazil. Read the story.

Mestre Pintor compensated us for our lost money, then our great friends Lucas and Jatoba took time out to go looking through the capoeira shops of downtown Sao Paulo.

Later on Friday night I was chatting with Lucas in SP on Skype. In the middle of the conversation he called the capoeira shop and told them what happened to the pandeiro skin. Right there on the phone they promised to send us a replacement skin for free!

So from now on expect lots more rodas! Lots more music classes! And lots more axé!
