World No Tobacco Day 2007
Date: May 31st 2007
100% smoke-free is the only answer
Tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world. It is well known that half the people who smoke regularly today – about 650 million people – will eventually be killed by tobacco. Equally alarming is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people who have never smoked die each year from diseases caused by breathing second-hand tobacco smoke.

All over the world May 31 marks World No Tobacco Day. Each year the World Health Organization chooses a different theme for WNTD to focus on. This year’s theme is particularly important for Japan to listen to if it wishes to join the rest of the developed world in it’s policy on tobacco control.
Any visitor to Tokyo will agree that actual tobacco control measures are very light, despite the many streets where smoking is prohibited, and the number of “non-smoking” areas. Things are slowly changing, but people need to be reminded and educated about the reality of the problem.

Last year Mark Gibbens took a 3000km walk across Japan to increase awareness of the dangers of tobacco, and this year Peter Young and Stefano Lodola are walking through Tokyo for the same cause.
On reflecting upon what he accomplished last year Mark said “I feel sad that over 300 Japanese continue to die everyday from tobacco related sickness and Mr Koizumi and the Japanese Government continue ignor this grave problem. I’m sure if a JAL “Jumbo” crashed every day of the year, something would be done within a week to rectify the problem.”
