Professor Gringo’s Workshops: FAQ
Here’s a list of questions people have been asking about the workshops and some I thought you might ask.
Read the F.A.Q.
Do I have to pre-pay my workshop fees?
No, just send an email to cacapa.mob@gmail.com, tell us which days you’re coming, show up on time (5-10minutes before class), change clothes, pay before class starts and enjoy your discount! More info here.
What do I need to bring to every workshop?
Of course bring your capoeira pants, and Bantus t-shirt or two. Bring a sweat towel, bring your own ECO friendly re-usable drink bottle (and your own re-usable chopsticks if we eat out after), and lots of energy. Bring suitable outside sports shoes for the street rodas!
Do I need to bring my berimbau and pandeiro to every workshop?
Yes, we’ll have music workshops and rodas everyday.
Do I need to wear capoeira pants and Bantus t-shirt at every workshop?
GBC Members: Please try your best to wear a clean, neat Bantus t-shirt, and capoeira pants to every workshop. Save your GBC Japan uniform for Saturday’s Open Roda or wash and dry it in time. Non-members: You’re also welcome to wear your capoeira clothes to every workshop.
Can I buy some capoeira t-shirts or pants from you?
Yes, we have Bantus t-shirts from 2000yen, and pants from 4500yen. Please email at least three hours before class starts to let us know you want to buy some.
What if I’m running late?
Send Caçapa or Cafune an email or try calling to let us know.
I don’t get out of my office until 7pm and it takes me an hour to get to class. What should I do?
If you’re a 9-5 office worker, try your best to get everything done on time, tell your boss you have an appointment, and must leave at 5pm. It’s your life, please take charge, take responsibility. Do you work to live, or live to work?
Remember, we’ll have street rodas or something special after every weekday workshop, so if you only catch the last 30 minutes of the workshop but give 100% in the street roda then you won’t have wasted your time. Come say hi to Gringo and our other special guests and show some Japanese hospitality.
Is it OK to drink alcohol after the Open Roda on Saturday night?
That’s probably not such a good idea. You’ll have a pretty good opportunity on Sunday to have fun at Festa Junina, even though we always encourage responsible drinking.

Do I have to wear a costume and dance forró at Festa Junina?
Only if you like having a good time. You’ll have time to change into your costume before the party starts. There’ll be a forró lesson at the start of Festa Junina and some fun games to get you into the mood!
Can I bring my own drinks or special home-made Brazilian treats to Festa Junina?
Just make sure you bring enough for everyone!
Can I bring a camera, video camera, or audio recording device to the workshops or rodas?
Sure, as long as it’s for personal use only, you’re more than welcome. Please let us know where you upload the data, and make us a copy.
I have a question about capoeira or special request, can I ask?
Of course, ask when the time is right. Please respect Professor Gringo.
NO TALKING DURING THE WORKSHOPS. If you don’t understand something, look a little closer, focus, concentrate. If you still don’t get it, put your hand up and ask when the time is right. Workshops will be taught in Portuguese/English. There will be Japanese translation when needed.
What should I expect?
Expect to be blown away! Expect your life to change! Expect to learn something new, or correct some old, bad habits. Expect to sweat, a lot! Expect to go home, sore, tired, and exhilarated. Expect to have the time of your life.
What shouldn’t I expect?
Don’t expect to be a capoeira master after one week of workshops. Don’t expect to understand everything or to be able to master every move after one workshop.
Can I smoke/drink before or after the workshops or rodas?
It’s not acceptable to smoke/drink before or after the workshops or rodas. Of course it’s never acceptable to smoke during the workshop. Non-smokers and smokers alike are welcome, but please respect this rule. Festa Junina is a 100% Non-Smoking event, and we encourage responsible drinking, but please have a good time.
Can I bring my friends, family, boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife, neighbours, co-workers to the workshops, rodas or Festa Junina?
Of course. Tell EVERYONE you know about this event. It’s always free to watch. Street Rodas and Open Rodas are free. Beginners are welcome to attend the Beginners Workshops on Saturday and Sunday.
Can I access the blog on my mobile phone browser?
Yes, I use an N702iD with docomo and our blog works quite well. I can even view the photos and other images. You can also try our mobile phone site (only the schedule page is currently “out of order”), or send an email to info.gbcjp@gmail.com to get an updated schedule emailed to you.
I hope that covers just about everything. If you have any further questions, please leave a comment on this page, or over on the mixi community, or send an email.
axé!
