2007 Wrap-Up

2007 Wrap-up

Wow! What a year!

2007 was our biggest year yet! With the help of the GBCJ committee, GBCJ Action Teams, volunteers, and friends, Grupo Bantus Capoeira Japan was able to host and take part in some huge events and some awesome projects!

Design Festa

2007 saw GBCJ perform live to a huge and highly receptive audience in Tokyo Big Sight at Design Festa vol. 25. It was also our first time to perform maculelê live.

Professor Gringo in Tokyo

2007 also saw our very first guest Bantus instructor Professor Gringo arrive in Tokyo. He brought with him fellow Bantulinos Shireen and Chacal for one week of fantastic workshops, street rodas in Kichijoji, an Open Roda, and Festa Junina.

Our first Batizado!

And without a doubt the highlight for GBCJ in 2007 was our very first capoeira festival and batizado with not one, not two, but three invited guest Bantus instructors Zoi, Claudinho, and Rafael and a bunch of guests from around Tokyo, and as far as Ibaraki, Gunma, Shizuoka, and Sapporo!

Trip Down Under

With the axé still high from our batizado, 10 GBCJ members hopped onto a plane and flew south to Perth, Australia for the huge event that was the 1st World Capoeira Meeting and Decade of Bantus Capoeira Australia. We took part in workshops of capoeira, samba, instrument making, and even Aboriginal dance. We met hundreds of other Bantulinos from Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, Holland and Brazil. We also met up with Mestre Pintor (GBC Brazil), Mestre Escamoso (GBC Brazil), Graduado Zoi (GBC Holland), Graduado Claudinho (GBC Singapore), Instrutor Rafael (GBC Malaysia), Instrutor Grão (GBC Brazil), and Instrutor Geléia (GBC Germany). We also met Contra-Mestre Borracha (Capoeiracre - Sydney), and Professor Vira Lata (Ginga Mundo - Melbourne).

Google Group Email List

Google Group Email List for GBCJ members only. If you’re a current member of Grupo Bantus Capoeira Japan, please join now to keep up-to-date. You can also upload and download private documents, photos, videos etc. I hope this will help us to have a more effective and efficient communication between instructors and students, and within the student body here at GBCJ.

Blog Update

We finally worked out all the bugs and uploaded the “new” Bantus Capoeira Japan blog for 2008. At first glance it may just look like the colours have changed, but have a good look around. Check out the links at the top of the page. Things have changed over at “カポエイラとは?”, “バントゥスとは?”, “クラスとは?”, “Capoeira?”, “Bantus?”, and “Class?”. We’ve also added Gravatars to the commenting on our blog. And have a good click around the sidebar area on the right. New videos, photos, mp3s, and other links.

Thanks to our translation team for the Japanese pages.

Thanks to Tartaruga from GBC Malaysia for your help with the back end.

Keep checking for more updates.

RIP Jabuti

In loving memory of Jabuti/Bola, who passed away on Wednesday night in Perth, Western Australia.

Jabuti was a Bantus capoeirista from Singapore, he moved to Perth and was a dedicated student of Professor Gringo.

Several GBC Japan students first met Jabuti when they participated in the 1st World Meet and Decade of GBC Australia back in September 2007 in Perth. They shared some great times with Jabuti, and we all admired his determination and caring nature.

Our condolences to his friends and family he leaves behind. Too young.

RIP Jabuti

Happy New Schedule

Happy New Schedule

Starting from Monday January 14th we’ll have a brand new schedule. I believe the new schedule is our best yet, allowing our members the greatest opportunity to improve their capoeira with GBCJ. During the week we’ll have two training days, Monday and Wednesday starting at 7.30pm and finishing around 8.45pm. Doors open at 7pm giving you enough time to change and get ready for class. The weekends will be changing too. Saturday class will take place during the day and has been extended. Sunday will be open to special capoeira events, special training, rodas, parties, and meetings.

Keep reading to learn more about our new schedule and upcoming events. Continue reading ‘Happy New Schedule’
