We had a very successful year in 2008. Our committee helped bring over 5 special guest instructors, including Mestre Pintor for one week, and Instrutor Lula for 3 whole months! This year we are sure Grupo Bantus Capoeira Japão will be doing lots more fantastic work here in Tokyo.
We’ll be voting for the 2009-2010 Committee and discussing plans for 2009. I hope all current and future GBCJ Members can make it to our meeting.
2009 is already proving to be a year full of great projects and exciting opportunities. Despite the below zero temperatures the GBCJ crew has been busy sharing the axé all over Tokyo.
Classes recommenced a little earlier this year with our special guest instructor Lula, on Sunday January 4th. After the class Instrutor Lula and students headed over to Tribo da Lua’s open roda. The next event we attended was Cordão de Ouro’s open roda on January 10th.
On January 11th we headed over to the Hooplover’s Workshop and had a great time!
On Sunday we had our worlds turned up side down (literally, we were *attempting* hand stands and walking on our hands) by the rocking crew from Bantus Capoeira Japan. Beyond a full mind and body workout we were introduced to the instrumental rhythms, expressive elements and history of the powerful form of movement.
Instrutor Lula returned to Brazil on the 18th, and the rest of the Bantus crew headed over to the Yakult Hall and put on a great performance at the Amnesty Film Festival 2009.
Thank you very much for your performance yesterday for our film festival. I enjoyed very much, and I assume everyone in the hall enjoyed a lot!
You made the audience cheerful and relaxed. One thing that I felt pity was that we could not give you enough time to perform.
On the 25th we popped into the launch party of our friend Osuman Orlando Bingle’s new Antaru Cafe 8 in Asagaya and shared some of the Bantus Capoeira axé.
Don’t forget to come on over for our monthly gig at Antaru Cafe 8 on February 22nd.
Grupo Bantus Capoeira Japão would like to officially welcome Thailand to the family! Axé! Lead by Instructor Tong, Bantus Capoeira Thailand joined us last year, and now officially have things up and running. We’re looking forward to training together, and meeting up at this year’s World Meet in Brazil!

Take the south exit, turn left, past McDonald’s Restaurant, and walk down “Ichibangai” street for about 5 minutes. Antaru Cafe 8 is on your left.
We saw Timbalada, Jorge Ben Jor, Maria Rita, Gilberto Gil, even a tribe of Amazon Indians paid us a visit. Famous Brazilian musicians, artists, politicians, sports men and women all made their way across the seas to share the Brazilian culture in the International Year of Exchange, 100 Years of Immigration Brazil-Japan.
But the biggest stars of all waited until the end of October to touch down on Japanese soil. Instrutor Lula, Instrutor Grão, Graduado Rafael, Graduado Claudinho, and Mestre Pintor stayed for a total of 2 weeks of workshops, street rodas, and our 2nd Batizado!
One instructor decided to stay over for a little bit longer, and Grupo Bantus Capoeira Japão had three months of intense capoeria classes with Instrutor Lula.
The 2008 highlights included:
Instrutor Canguru in Tokyo
Founder of Grupo Bantus Capoeira Australia (1997), Canguru hopped over to Japan to share some of his capoeira and musical knowledge with members of GBCJ in a couple of workshops and rodas in Tokyo.
Summer of Capoeira!
As soon as the weather heated up, so did the capoeira! We took to the streets of Kichijoji, we took to the parks (Showa Kinen Koen & Inokashira Koen), and we took to the beaches (Tsujido & Zushi). Spreading the word that capoeira is for everybody, GBCJ wasn’t afraid to let everyone know that we love capoeira!
Our 2nd Batizado!
The biggest event this year had to be the 2nd Bantus Capoeira Japan Festival and Batizado. Two weeks full of workshops, street rodas, and cultural exchange right here in Tokyo. Brazil landed in Kichijoji and Mitaka bringing with her 5 humans that eat, sleep, breath, and dream capoeira. No other capoeira festival in Japan brought over such a wealth of knowledge and experience, such a dynamic team of capoeira experts, a family of capoeira professionals! The 2nd Grupo Bantus Capoeira Japan Batizado brought together the pounding percussion of Japanese Taiko drums, the soulful improvisations of Mestre Pintor on berimbau, the amazing acrobatics of Bantus Capoeira, a team of Sambanistas and sexy samba dancers, and guests from all over Japan. Cafuné gained her Verde/Amarela (Green/Yellow cord), and Caçapa moved up to the ranks of Instrutor receiving his Amarela (Yellow cord) from Mestre Pintor himself.
4th World Meet Bantus 2008 in Malaysia
Caçapa and Sorriso represented Japan on their trip down to Malaysia and Singapore. It was a fantastic experience catching up with old and new Bantus Capoeira friends from Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
